The existing cabin house is a one story cabin with a daylight basement on Vashon Island in Washington State. The existing cabin’s lot coverage can’t be increased because of the tight site development restrictions resulting from an existing drain field. On the other hand, the clients want to create a complete reorganization and enhancement of the main floor spaces.
Vandeventer + Carlander Architects solve the problems by demolishing the existing structure down to the main floor. Here, the architects create an additional floor area which translated in making a small addition, replacing a previous exterior deck. Extended into the main structure, the addition that is an insertion wood box slides in over the existing floor structure and cantilevers out over existing basement walls. This design sure not affecting the existing drain field. The wood box accommodates the master bedroom, bath and kitchen. The remodelling daylight basement will be functioed as a family room, two bedrooms, and a new bath and laundry.
