This minimalist house was developed on the triangle site with a width of 18 m.The demanding of client was to make the best use of the characteristic site form to build a house with both privacy protection and a sense of openness in the house. The house design was consisted of the echelon volume successive along the site form, and the high wall. The landscape-oriented façade was one of the external features and brought about by making good use of the site width. People’s line of sight to be introduced in the horizontal direction was allowed. The interior space design also made the site width. On the first floor the entrance hall was stood at the center. The Japanese room on the irregular site form separated its both ends are the spot gardens that are allocated in the spaces. As the line of sight is designed to be as long as possible, the internal space is visually extended. The space that gives an open feeling was realized. On the second floor the living room and the balcony were positioned on both ends. In addition, the ceiling of the living room, which was designed, was higher than that of the other rooms. These designs increased visual expansion. One of the elements that produced a sense of openness was the opening of the living room. The opening of the living room was as well as the glass wall on the balcony. So, the site form selected the locations for the openings and controlled the line of sight. The modern house created the spaces that gave a sense of openness but were closed off to the periphery.
FORM/Kouichi Kimura Architects created this house on a wedge of land in Shiga, Japan. The Japanese house was called House of Reticence. The box house was consisted of blocks creating triangular courtyards along the boundary. The central hallway downstairs directed to a master bedroom, children’s room and Japanese room, while there were the combined living, kitchen and dining space on the upper storey, which opened onto a balcony.
