Home for a family of 4, the house design was on the outskirts of the development area “Mittlere Rosselen” in Esslingen near Stuttgart, Germany.

Sloping down in east-west orientation, with their old trees, the hillside property was merging into the surrounding meadow orchards. The building was two-storey only on the garden side to be three-storeys facing the residential road. On ground floor level the house was entered. The entrance hall was led by stairs to the living area on the first floor where kitchen, living and dining room are arranged as a round trip around the central staircase. The large windows, superb views over the surrounding meadows were offered. Nature was allowed into the rooms. On the second floor, there were bedroom, children’s rooms and bathroom. Despite the compact floor plan, vista across the complete building length, a generous impression of the rooms was created. Using a minimum of trades and materials, building construction had been implemented. On the outside the building, a rough concrete skin was showed with precisely cut in openings. White plaster block walls and exposed concrete ceilings and stairs defined the interior. White covered doors, build-in furniture and kitchen and blended in unobtrusively with the rooms.

There was a concrete house near Stuttgart that could be sealed with sliding screens. The three-storey House KW was designed by German architects Käß Hauschildt. Located in the Esslingen district, the modern house was nestled against a sloping meadow overlooking an orchard. Multipurpose ground floor rooms were connected by a concrete staircase with first floor living areas and second floor bedrooms. Throughout the house, concrete ceilings were exposed. A hill in Alibag was the site for this home. Conceptually, a departure from the “stepped terrace” typology that one would conventionally employ on a heavily contoured site was the design of the home.

Instead, a cuboid that was tilted and suspended over the ground was deconstructed. It seemed to simultaneously ‘float’ and ‘flow’ down the hill. Organizing the structure over 3 levels, the contours of the hill had been used. Two large bedroom suites at different levels with a large interstitial void that was inhabited by floating connections were in the ‘tube’. The creation of singular sensory experiences became the primary organizing and sculpting vector. Engaging the senses in unconventional ways, numerous geometric inflections and articulations were designed. Yielding unique moments of being suspended in space, of intimate enclosure, of vertiginous assaults but most importantly, of being connected to nature, a walk through the house was meant. The design philosophy was followed by the structure with concrete planes making contact with the ground, while steel floats above it. With the ground on which it rested, the home seemed to conduct a constant dialogue; it was informed by the earth but chosen at certain junctures to thrust over a precipice, completely oblivious of it.

Privy was made by the hilltop location of this house to some spectacular views of the sea as well as of the surrounding terrain. Every space was designed to partake of these views that rendered the house unique. To framed portraits and the constant three dimensional articulation of the viewing platform, the transition formed panoramic. The self imposed one with regards to retaining the integrity of the hill and maximizing the sustainability of the development was the only restriction.

The conundrum of creating a complementary foil was faced to the distinctly extroverted structure that was perched on the apex of the hill. On the one hand, the second home ought to partake of the same stunning views. The solution presented self in the form of an existing degraded concrete structure. By locating the second home on this footprint and by making use of the already excavated area, the house was submerged beneath the ground. The only trace of development was a crystalline fragment emerging from the earth, when viewed from the first home. The home was self effacing, a more discrete and introverted alter-ego of its hilltop sibling.

Faceted Roof Design:
A re-interpretation of the traditional clay tiled roof, but re-designed for better performance was the main roof of the living room and verandah. It had been parametrically manipulated to dip. Providing weather protection for the main pool deck, the entrance verandah and the car porch, it was extended. In addition, allowing headroom for the stair leading to the upper level, it swept upwards. Re-analysis of the traditional pitched roof was necessitated by high wind speeds and heavy rains which while performing well in homogenous spatial conditions, failed to meet the multiple performance criteria.

Floating Infinity Pool with Verandah Below:
The desire to have the primary living space (living room) and verandah in close proximity to the swimming pool was part of the client’s brief. The contours of the hill were used to design a stilted pool that satisfied the client’s requirements. An auxiliary shaded verandah was also provided below it opened onto a large garden and which could be used in inclement weather. Merging the pool foreground with the background of the Arabian Sea, the knife edge was createed.

Tubular Steel Truss
At an angle that was almost identical to the natural slope of the ground and with a single gesture tilted the ‘Tube’ that rested on the two blocks, a tangible link to the hill was created, whilst simultaneously generating a physically liberated space. The earth was forced into the centre of the home. The volume Similar linked programs and weather protection was provided by its skins to the bridge connections hovering within the courtyard.

For the elevated perch which was desired to give the occupant the best possible view of the surroundings without creating large obtrusive footprints on the ground, the concept of the floating tube allowed. Interpreting the landscape, the house functioned as a tool. At numerous junctures, creating a sense of floating amongst the elements, the object dematerialized, and the varying experiential conditions were its unique strength.

An elevated steel tunnel, bridged corridors and a rooftop swimming pool on stilts were featured in this jumbled house in India. House at Alibag, which was located on a hilltop facing the Mumbai skyline, was designed by Indian studio Malik Architecture. Both rectangular and triangular windows perforated faceted walls and ceilings line rooms throughout the house. An open courtyard, over-sailed by bridges connecting rooms on the first and second floors was at the centre of the three-storey building. Joined by another of these bridges, a bedroom at each end was enclosed by the angled tunnel that drove through the upper storeys of the house.
